The arrival of the knowledge economy and high-tech era has provided humanity with the benefits of science and technology. Yet it has also fostered a sedentary lifestyle resulting in the rapid decline of physical well-being. Medical research confirms that exercise is the most effective way to improve physical fitness, promote physical and mental health, and improve one's quality of life. The Sports
Affairs Council is the highest authority in Taiwan regarding physical fitness and sports. Our mission is to upgrade Taiwan's competitive capabilities, strengthen the popularity of sports, promote public health, create a high-quality environment for public sports, and expand opportunities for Taiwan in the international sports arena.
At the Athens Olympics in 2004, Taiwan won two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal, marking Taiwan's best showing its 72-year history of Olympic participation. In 2006, Taiwan won its first gold medal in baseball at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar while local hero Wang Chien-ming pitched his way to 19 victories to beat South Korea's Chan Ho Park for the best single-season performance by an Asian pitcher in the U.S. Major League Baseball. Taiwan's ultra marathon runner Kevin Lin joined two other runners in traversing the Sahara Desert to help raise awareness for the need of clean water in Africa. The Chinese-Taipei women's softball team earned a birth in the Beijing Olympics while the local tennis starts Chan Yung-jan and Chuang Chiajung teamed up to win second place in the women's doubles at the Australian Open. These outstanding achievements by Taiwanese athletes in the international arena have made people sit up and take notice. In order to build on this excellent record, the SAC is actively training athletes in hopes of upgrading Taiwan's ability in competitive sports. In views of these goals, we have helped establish a high-altitude training center as well as a sports training base at Chung Cheng University in Chiayi. The SAC has been busy planning the introduction of a sports lottery, promoting plans to double the physically active population in Taiwan, promoting more participation in marine sports, arranging physical fitness testing activities, creating more environmentally friendly sport venues and building bike trails. We have also been enhancing international sports exchange through assisting and planning for the 2009 World Games to be held in Kaohsiung.Through these efforts we hope to enhance physical fitness, improve the public physical and mental health, and raise Taiwan's profile on the international stage.
The SAC will also continue to meet current social environment and future developmental needs in Taiwan by constantly pursuing the twin core administrative goals of promoting national sports and upgrading competitive capabilities. We hope to achieve this by building up a sports environment that satisfies the needs of the people, by promoting public participation in sports and fitness and by enhancing the ability of Taiwan's athletes in competitive sports. Working together, we can bring
physical fitness and sports in Taiwan to a new level, displaying to the world a healthy and democratic Taiwan.
